Loom
Loom as a living lighting system that integrates illumination with a biological process. The transparent, double-walled structure contains a water-based algae culture, while a protected central cavity houses the light source, ensuring safe separation between the electrical and liquid components. As light passes through the algae, it creates a soft, ambient glow that shifts with the movement and density of the culture. Subtle currents within the liquid continuously alter how light is diffused, producing an ever-changing pattern of light and shadows. The algae simultaneously absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen through photosynthesis, contributing to improved air quality while introducing a calming, biophilic presence into interior spaces. The removable lid features integrated ventilation, allowing the algae to breathe and function effectively. It can be easily opened for maintenance, enabling users to care for and harvest the algae over time. The result is a refined lighting object that not only illuminates a space but actively engages with its environment.
